IN NEWS:
- The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued an advisory warning people against a trojan called EventBot.
TERMS AND DEFINITIONS:
- Malwares: Malware, or malicious software, is any program or file that is harmful to a computer user. Types of malware can include computer viruses, worms, Trojan horses and spyware.
- Virus: A type of malware aimed to corrupt, erase or modify information on a computer before spreading to others.
- Trojan: It is a type of malware that is attached to what seems to be a legit programme but can take control of your computer. A Trojan is designed to damage, disrupt, steal, or in general inflict some other harmful action on your data or network.
- Worm: A piece of malware that can replicate itself in order to spread the infection to other connected computers.
EVENTBOT:
- The trojan affects Android smartphone users and steal their personal financial information.
- It abuses Android’s in-built accessibility features to steal user data from financial applications, read user SMS messages and intercept SMS messages, allowing malware to bypass two-factor authentication.
INDIAN COMPUTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (CERT-In):
- CERT-In is India’s nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents in the country.
- Its primary role is to raise security awareness among Indian cyber community and to provide technical assistance and advise them to help them recover from computer security incidents
- It functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
