Why in news?
- Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has released the Global Liveability Index 2023.
About Global Liveability Index:
- Global Liveability Index quantifies the challenges presented to an individual’s lifestyle in 173 cities worldwide.
- The index ranked the cities based on these five metrics:
- Healthcare, Culture, Environment, Education, and Stability.
- This ranking offers insights into the cities that excel in providing an exceptional quality of life.
Rankings of the Global Liveability Index 2023
- Top Livable cities:
- Vienna (Austria), Copenhagen (Denmark), Melbourne and Sydney (Australia).
- Bottom 3 Liveable cities:
- Algiers (Algeria), Tripoli (Libya) and Damascus (Syria).
- India:
- New Delhi and Mumbai - 41st position
- Chennai - 44th.
- Ahmedabad – 147th.
- Bengaluru - 148.
Observations made by the index:
- Attempts to restore normalcy after the Covid-19 pandemic and the “incremental improvements in liveability made by many developing countries” have been the biggest drivers of changes in its global liveability rankings.
- Those in Western Europe, in particular, have slipped in rankings due to increased instances of workers’ strikes failing to “match gains” made by cities in Asia and the Middle East.
- The cities which are plagued by ongoing civil unrest and military conflicts, amongst other issues, remained at the bottom of the list.
