Why in news?
- INS Viraat, is likely to be towed from Mumbai to Alang in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district next month to be dismantled and sold as scrap.
About INS Viraat:
- INS Viraat was a Centaur-class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy.
- INS Viraat was the flagship of the Indian Navy before INS Vikramaditya was commissioned in 2013.
- The ship was originally operated by British Navy till 1984 and was sold to India in 1987.
- It was the second aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy after INS Vikrant, which was operated between 1961 and 1997.
- It served for almost 30 years and was decommissioned in 2017.
- It will be dismantled at Alang in Gujarat, world’s largest ship breaking centre.
