Why in news?
- Sightings of the vulnerable Chinese white dolphin have risen by nearly 30 per cent in the waters off Hong Kong since boat and ferry traffic in the area was suspended in March.
About the dolphin:
- The Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Also called Chinese white dolphin or Pink dolphin) is a species of humpback dolphin inhabiting coastal waters of the eastern Indian and western Pacific Oceans.
- Fewer than 2,500 of the mammals survive in the Pearl River Delta, the body of water between Macau and Hong Kong and the primary habitat of the species.
- Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins live up to 40 years and weigh upto 230 kilograms.
- It is listed in IUCN red list as vulnerable.
