JAMINI ROY:

  • Jamini Roy was an Indian painter, born in 1887 in Bengal.
  • He was one of the most famous pupils of Abanindranath Tagore.
  • His painting style was a reaction against the Western tradition. His techniques and subject matters were influenced by traditional art of Bengal, such as the Kalighat paintings.
  • Jamini Roy received many awards and accolades, such as the Viceroy’s gold medal in 1934 and the Padma Bhushan in 1955.
  • In 1976, the Archaeological Society of India declared him one of ‘Nine Masters’ to be treated as treasure.
