IN NEWS:
- Amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, India has sent INS Kesari with essential supplies to island nations in the Indian ocean.
ABOUT THE MISSION:
- `Mission Sagar’ is being coordinated by the Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Defence and other agencies.
- INS Kesari has departed for Maldives, Mauritius, Seychelles, Madagascar and Comoros with food items, COVID related Medicines, special ayurvedic medicines and Medical Assistance Teams.
- The deployment is in consonance with India’s vision of Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR). Mission cements India’s status as first responder in Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
SAGAR VISION:
- In 2015, India unveiled the strategic vision for the Indian Ocean i.e. Security and Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR).
- Through SAGAR, India seeks to deepen economic and security cooperation with its maritime neighbours and assist in building their maritime security capabilities. India would cooperate on the exchange of information, coastal surveillance, building of infrastructure and strengthening their capabilities.
