Why in news?
- ISRO is developing a Next-Gen Launch Vehicle (NGLV), which will replace operational systems like Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV).
About Next-Gen Launch Vehicle (NGLV):
- In NGLV, ISRO is looking at a cost-efficient, three-stage to-orbit, a reusable heavy-lift vehicle with a payload capability of ten tonnes to Geostationary Transfer Orbit (GTO).
Features
- Propulsion:
- NGLV will have semi-cryogenic propulsion (refined kerosene as fuel with liquid oxygen (LOX) as oxidiser) for the booster stages which is cheaper and more efficient.
- NGLV will feature a simple, robust design which allows bulk manufacturing and minimal turnaround time.
- The new rocket could also be ‘reusable’
- A reusable rocket will have a smaller payload than an expendable one.
- If it is reusable, the payload will be around five tonnes and if it’s expendable, it will go up 10 tonnes.
- Potential applications:
- The uses of NGLVs will be in the areas of launching communication satellites, deep space missions, future human spaceflight and cargo missions.
