Why in news?

• 8 ‘nutraceutical-immunity boosting’ products were launched under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Priyojana (PMBJP).

About PMBJP:

•  It aims to make quality generic medicines available at affordable prices for all, particularly the poor and disadvantaged, through exclusive outlets.
• It also aims to spread awareness and create demand for generic medicines,.
• It covers all districts in the country.
•  All State Governments shall be directed to open Janaushadhi Kendras in Government run hospitals and medical colleges

What is BPPI?

• BPPI is the implementing agency of Pradhan Mantri Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP).
• BPPI was established in December, 2008 under the Department of Pharmaceuticals, Government of India.
• It works under the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers.
• Affordable generic drugs are procured from pharmaceutical companies by the BPPI and supplied to various Janaushadhi Kendras under PMBJP.
