Why in news?

  • India had hosted a special meeting of the United Nations Security Council’s Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC). This is the first such meeting of UNSC CTC in India since its establishment in 2001.

  • In the meeting, the Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC) unanimously adopted the Delhi Declaration (non-binding document) on countering the use of new and emerging technologies for terrorist purposes (internet, new payment mechanism and use of drones)

About Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC):

  • The Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) was established by the UN Security Council resolution 1373 (2001)
  • It was adopted unanimously in 2001 in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the United States.
  • The Committee comprising all 15 Security Council members
  • The committee were tasked with monitoring the implementation of resolution 1373 (2001)
    • The resolution requested countries to implement a number of measures intended to enhance their legal and institutional ability to counterterrorist activities at home, in their regions and around the world.

  • The permanent representative of India to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj served as the chair of the CTC for 2022.
