IN NEWS:
According to Indian diplomats, all major military contracts between Russia and India, including the deliveries of S-400 air defence missile systems, will be on schedule despite the coronavirus pandemic.
S400 SYSTEM:
- The s400 Triumph is a mobile, surface-to-air anti-aircraft missile system developed in the 1990s by Russia. It is described as one of the most advanced air defense systems available today.
- The system can engage all types of aerial targets, including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), and ballistic and cruise missiles, within the range of 400km at an altitude of up to 30km. The system can simultaneously engage 36 targets.
- Besides Russia, Belarus and China have been using the s400. Turkey will soon join this group of nations.
- India completed negotiations in 2018 to buy the system through a Rs 40,000 crore deal. Delivery is expected by 2025.
- However, the US has strong reservations against the Indo-Russian deal
