IN NEWS:
The Srinagar-Leh national highway was reopened after remaining closed for over four months owing to heavy snowfall.
THE HIGHWAY:
- The 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway (NH 1D in old numbering) connects Ladakh with Jammu and Kashmir. It was one of the only two roads that connected Ladakh with the rest of India, the other being Leh-Manali Highway.
- In the new number system, it forms part of NH 1, the northernmost East-West highway in India.
- NH 1D transited through extremely treacherous terrain. The two highest passes on the NH include Fotu La and Zoji La.
- Heavy snowfall along the passes cut Leh from Srinagar for some six months each year. During springtime, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) removes the snow and repairs the road.
