WHY IN NEWS?

Centre has recently released the Sample Registration System (SRS) bulletin based on data collected for 2018.

ABOUT SAMPLE REGISTRATION SYSTEM (SRS)

  • Sample Registration System (SRS) is a large-scale demographic survey for providing reliable annual estimates of Infant mortality rate, birth rate, death rate and other fertility & mortality indicators at the national and sub- national levels.
  • The field investigation consists of continuous enumeration of births and deaths in selected sample units by resident part time enumerators, generally anganwadi workers & teachers and an independent survey every six month by SRS supervisors.
  • The data obtained by these two independent functionaries are matched.
  • The unmatched and partially matched events are re-verified in the field and thereafter an unduplicated count of births and deaths is obtained.

KEY FINDINGS

  • The national birth rate in 2018 stood at 20, and death and infant mortality rates stood at 6.2 and 32 respectively. The rates are calculated per one thousand of the population.
  • Madhya Pradesh has the worst infant mortality rate (48) in the country while Nagaland has the best (4).
  • The death rate of India has witnessed a significant decline over the last four decades from 14.9 in 1971 to 6.2 in 2018.
  • Chhattisgarh has the highest death rate (8), while Delhi has the lowest (3.3).
  • India’s birth rate has declined drastically over the last four decades from 36.9 in 1971 to 20.0 in 2018.
  • Bihar continues to remain at the top of list in birth rate (26.2) while Andaman and Nicobar is at the bottom (11.2).
